Preparing your home for flooring installation means clearing furniture, making entryways accessible, securing pets and kids, and letting your flooring team know about any special requests. At Mosaic Company, we handle the old flooring removal—so you can sit back and look forward to your new space.

Couple preparing for flooring installation

Installing new flooring is exciting—it transforms your space, adds value to your home, and gives everything a fresh, clean feel. But a smooth installation day starts with a little prep.

At The Mosaic Company, we believe in making the process as stress-free as possible. That’s why we take care of the heavy lifting (literally—we remove the old flooring for you!). Still, there are a few things you can do ahead of time to make sure the job goes quickly and smoothly. Think of it as getting your home “flooring day ready.”

Whether you’re installing plush carpet, durable luxury vinyl plank, or timeless hardwood flooring, this guide covers exactly how to prep your space like a pro.

Step 1: Remove Furniture and Fragile Items

Before your install day, take some time to clear out the space where your new floors will go. This gives our crew full access to get the job done right—and safely.

Move all furniture:

Clear couches, tables, beds, bookcases, and any other large items from the room. If you’ve arranged with us to move furniture as part of your quote, just make sure breakables are packed up ahead of time.

Take down wall decor:

Remove mirrors, artwork, and shelves near the floor or entryways to prevent accidental bumps or damage.

Unplug and store electronics:

TVs, speaker systems, gaming consoles—anything with cords or cables should be disconnected and stored safely.

Pro tip:

If you’re moving a lot of items yourself, label them with masking tape to make setup easier once your floors are finished.

Step 2: Make Entryways and Hallways Installer-Friendly

Our team will be moving materials and tools in and out of your home, so clearing access paths saves time and reduces risk.

Clear the driveway or garage:

If our flooring installers are loading in materials through the garage, make sure the path is clear of vehicles and stored items.

Unlock gates and doors:

Let us know in advance which entrance is easiest to access, and make sure all doors are unlocked on install day.

Keep hallways and stairs clear:

Remove rugs, shoes, and anything that could get in the way during transport or installation.

Cover nearby furniture if needed:

Some dust is unavoidable, especially if we’re removing old floors. You can use drop cloths or old sheets on nearby surfaces.

Step 3: Keep Pets and Kids Safe and Comfortable

Flooring installation comes with noise, tools, and a bit of chaos—it’s not the best environment for pets or little ones.

Create a safe space for pets:

We recommend keeping pets in a closed-off room away from the installation zone or arranging for them to stay with a friend or family member.

Plan ahead for kids:

If you have toddlers or young children at home, consider arranging alternate activities or outings during the install. Flooring projects can take several hours or multiple days depending on square footage.

Safety first:

Let everyone in your household know which areas are off-limits until the work is done and floors are ready to walk on.

Step 4: Let Us Handle Old Flooring Removal

Here’s one less thing to worry about—Mosaic Company handles your old flooring removal from start to finish.

We remove the old flooring:

Carpet, tile, vinyl, laminate—you name it, we’ll lift it. You don’t have to lift a finger (or rent a dumpster).

We clean up too:

We properly dispose of old materials and prep the subfloor so it’s smooth, clean, and ready for installation.

What you need to do:

Just let us know during your consultation if there’s anything unique about your space—like floor heating, uneven subfloors, or special materials.

Step 5: Prep for Dust, Noise & Cleanup

Even with a professional crew, flooring installation can stir up a little mess. Here’s what you can expect:

Some noise:

Power tools, vacuums, and saws are part of the process. If you work from home or need a quiet space, plan accordingly.

Keep dust controlled:

We minimize dust as best as possible, but it’s smart to close vents, shut doors, and cover nearby surfaces just in case.

Final clean-up:

We’ll leave your space broom-clean and walk you through the finished job. You may want to do a quick wipe-down of surfaces nearby after the work is done. When dealing with tile and grout, several passes with a mop will be needed to completely eliminate haze from the grout.
